Gourmia Espresso Machine Review: Is It Worth It?

Welcome to my Gourmia espresso machine review, I'm Mark. A bag of Ethiopian Yirgacheffe is always on my bench for judging Gourmia gear. The Gourmia espresso machine is a budget countertop pump espresso maker from a Brooklyn appliance brand.
The best known model is the GCM4230. It has a 15-bar pump, a 1.2 L (40 fl oz) tank and one-touch icons for four drinks. It makes good espresso for its price and froths milk well for a budget model. Owners rate it 4.3 out of 5 across 31 ratings. They dislike the noise and the plastic build.
No independent lab has tested the machine, so reliability is unproven and a one-year warranty is the only backstop. The $50 sale price makes the case for a beginner. Below, I cover owner ratings, upkeep and descaling and warranty and price. No company sponsored this page.
What Is the Gourmia Espresso Machine?
The Gourmia espresso machine is a budget countertop pump espresso maker from the Brooklyn appliance brand Gourmia. The best known model is the GCM4230. It has a 15-bar pump and a removable 1.2 L (40 fl oz) water tank.
Gourmia designs countertop kitchen appliances in Brooklyn, New York. The founder is Heshy Biegeleisen. The GCM4230 manual names The Steelstone Group of Brooklyn as its publisher.
The manual calls the GCM4230 an 8-in-1 one-touch automatic espresso maker. It draws 1,300 W at 120 V and 60 Hz.
Despite the one-touch label, the GCM4230 is not a bean-to-cup machine. The user grinds the coffee, fills the filter, tamps and locks the portafilter into the brew head. The machine handles the brewing after that.
Gourmia states that the brand is ETL certified. Intertek issues the ETL mark. Intertek tests to UL standards, so an ETL listing covers electrical safety.
Which Gourmia Espresso Machine Models Exist?
Gourmia espresso machine models come in three main styles: a one-touch automatic, a slim 20-bar pump unit and a steam-brewed 4-shot maker.
The GCM4230 is the 15-bar one-touch model with an automatic milk frother. It is the machine most buyers mean when they search for a Gourmia espresso machine.
The Slim GCM3110 has a 20-bar pump, an LCD for single, double and manual shots, and a steam wand. It draws 1,350 W and holds 43 oz (1.3 L) of water. The body measures 12 x 6 x 12 in (30 x 15 x 30 cm).
The 4-shot steam model brews up to 4 shots in one cycle. A turn of a knob starts the brew. A glass carafe doubles as the measuring cup, and a frothing wand makes milk foam.
Gourmia Model Types:
| Model | Pump | Key feature |
|---|---|---|
| GCM4230 | 15 bar | Automatic milk frother |
| Slim GCM3110 | 20 bar | LCD and steam wand |
| 4-shot steam model | Steam-brewed | Knob control and frothing wand |
Gourmia also lists a GCM5500 one-touch machine, a GCM4500 with a built-in grinder and a GCM7000 capsule machine.
How Does the Gourmia Espresso Machine Work?
The Gourmia espresso machine works by pushing hot water through ground coffee with a 15-bar pump when a drink icon is tapped. Each icon sets the drink: espresso, cappuccino, latte or americano.
The number of taps sets the size. One tap of an icon brews a single shot. Two taps brew a double. The machine beeps three times when the brew ends and returns to standby.
The 15-bar figure is the pump rating, not necessarily the pressure at the coffee. Home machines usually fit an OPV, an over-pressure valve, that holds extraction near 9 bar. Gourmia does not say whether the GCM4230 has one.
The one-touch label covers brewing only. The machine has no grinder, so the user still preps the coffee by hand.
Milk drinks need a second part. A separate milk reservoir holds milk up to its Max line. A froth strength control sets the foam. A silver froth tube lever swings the spout over the cup. Froth runs for up to three minutes.
The machine needs priming before first use. The user puts water in both reservoirs, locks an empty portafilter into the brew head and taps the cappuccino icon twice. The dispensed water is then discarded.
What Comes With the Gourmia Espresso Machine?
The Gourmia espresso machine comes with a portafilter, single and double shot filters, a measuring scoop with a tamper end and a user manual.
The body of the machine adds parts that hold liquid and catch spills. These are a removable water reservoir, a separate milk reservoir, a removable drip tray and a removable coaster. Each part lifts out for washing.
The manual gives a mug size guide. A single espresso fills 2 oz (59 ml) and a double fills 3 oz (89 ml). A single cappuccino fills 5 oz (148 ml) and a double fills 10 oz (296 ml). A single latte fills 12 oz (355 ml) and a double fills 16 oz (473 ml). Americano sizes are 5 oz (148 ml) and 10 oz (296 ml).
Removing the drip tray makes room for taller mugs.
Drink Sizes:
| Drink | Single | Double |
|---|---|---|
| Espresso | 2 oz (59 ml) | 3 oz (89 ml) |
| Cappuccino | 5 oz (148 ml) | 10 oz (296 ml) |
| Latte | 12 oz (355 ml) | 16 oz (473 ml) |
| Americano | 5 oz (148 ml) | 10 oz (296 ml) |
Does the Gourmia Espresso Machine Make Good Espresso?
Yes. The Gourmia espresso machine makes good espresso for its price. Owners call the shots consistent and the taste full for a machine at this level.
No independent tester has published shot times, water temperature or yield for the GCM4230. The verdict rests on owner ratings and the maker's specifications.
The body mixes plastic with stainless steel accents. A low price caps what the hardware can do. Espresso fans will find less control than on a pricier machine.
The GCM4230 has no built-in grinder. The user grinds beans first, fills the filter up to its MAX line and tamps until the surface is smooth.
A common shot recipe is 18 g (0.6 oz) of coffee in and 36 g (1.3 oz) of espresso out in 25 to 30 seconds. The GCM4230 doses by volume, so the shot cannot be tuned by weight.
Two of the 13 written reviews on the 15-bar model score the coffee poorly. One says the coffee tastes like plastic. The other calls the machine confusing.
Does the Gourmia Espresso Machine Froth Milk Well?
Yes. The Gourmia espresso machine froths milk well for a budget model and makes creamy foam for lattes. Easy foam is one of its two most praised features.
Praise for foam comes from owners of the 15-bar wand model. The GCM4230 adds an automatic frother.
The automatic frother makes cappuccino and latte at the push of a button. A manual option lets the user size the shot and the amount of froth.
Frothing runs for a maximum of three minutes. A second tap of the froth icon stops it early. The cappuccino and latte options stay hidden unless the milk reservoir sits firmly in the unit.
What Do Owners Say About the Gourmia Espresso Machine?
Owners rate the Gourmia espresso machine well, at 4.3 out of 5 across 31 ratings on the 15-bar model. Ease of use and foam lead the praise.
The 31 ratings sit on the 15-bar model with a frothing wand, a sibling of the GCM4230. No lab or editorial test exists. Owner ratings are therefore the only hands-on evidence.
Of the 31 ratings, 24 are five stars (77%). One each is four, three and two stars. Four are one star (13%).
Rating Breakdown:
| Stars | Ratings |
|---|---|
| 5 stars | 24 (77%) |
| 4 stars | 1 |
| 3 stars | 1 |
| 2 stars | 1 |
| 1 star | 4 (13%) |
Praise comes mostly from first-time espresso buyers. They value ease and price. The few harsh reviews are short and give little detail.
The Slim GCM3110 scores lower, at 3.9 out of 5 across 11 ratings. The sample is small, so one or two low scores move the average.
What Do Owners Like About the Gourmia Espresso Machine?
Owners like the Gourmia espresso machine most for how easy it is to use. Walmart tags five reviews with ease of use, and the summary lists simple operation as a pro.
The slim body takes little counter space, and buyers with small kitchens mention the compact footprint.
The machine also heats quickly, so a drink does not take long to start. The removable reservoir makes refilling and cleaning simple.
Buyers call the machine good value for the money. The milk foam earns repeat praise, including from owners who had never used an espresso maker.
What Do Owners Dislike About the Gourmia Espresso Machine?
Owners dislike the Gourmia espresso machine for its noise, its short steam wand and its plastic build.
Owners raise three main complaints:
- Noise: The pump can be very loud. A buyer who otherwise rates the machine five stars still warns of the noise.
- Steam wand: The steam wand on the 15-bar model is short.
- Plastic build: The plastic parts feel sturdy but plain at this price.
Four of the 31 ratings are one star. The written complaints are one line each: the machine is confusing and the coffee tastes like plastic.
How Do You Maintain the Gourmia Espresso Machine?
Users maintain the Gourmia espresso machine by rinsing the portafilter and reservoirs after each use and running the CLEAN cycle.
Unplug the machine and let the metal parts cool before cleaning. The body, cord and plug never go in water.
After each brew, the user dumps the grounds with the filter retainer clip held over the filter edge. The portafilter and both filters get a rinse in warm soapy water. A damp cloth wipes the underside of the brew head.
The water reservoir gets emptied, washed with soapy water, rinsed and dried. The milk reservoir is hand wash only and is not dishwasher safe. Leftover milk goes into the fridge.
The CLEAN cycle flushes the lines. The user locks an empty filter into the brew head, puts a large heat-resistant cup below and fills both reservoirs with water. The froth strength control moves to Clean/Americano. A tap of the CLEAN icon starts the cycle, and three beeps end it.
CLEAN Cycle Steps:
- Lock an empty filter into the brew head.
- Place a large heat-resistant cup below the brew head.
- Fill both reservoirs with water.
- Move the froth strength control to Clean/Americano.
- Tap the CLEAN icon and wait for three beeps.
How Often Should You Descale the Gourmia Espresso Machine?
Owners should descale the Gourmia espresso machine every 2 to 3 months, or monthly with daily use. Limescale builds up inside the appliance over time.
The descale mix is water and vinegar, filled between the Min and Max marks. An empty filter sits in the brew head. A large cup catches the output while the CLEAN icon runs.
The leftover mix then sits in the reservoir overnight. The next day the user tips it out, rinses the reservoir and brews with plain water to wash out the vinegar.
A lingering vinegar smell calls for another cycle with plain water.
Is the Gourmia Espresso Machine Reliable?
No. The Gourmia espresso machine is not proven reliable, because no long-term durability test exists. Reliability stays an open question after the first year.
The body mixes plastic with stainless steel accents. Gourmia states that the brand is ETL certified for safety. That certification covers electrical safety and not lifespan, so it says little about how long the machine will work.
None of the 13 written reviews on the 15-bar model reports a breakdown. Written reviews from the first weeks of ownership cannot show failures after years of use.
A search of CPSC recall notices turns up no recall of a Gourmia espresso machine.
What Warranty Covers the Gourmia Espresso Machine?
The Gourmia espresso machine warranty covers defects for one full year from the date of purchase. It applies in the United States only.
The warranty needs proof of purchase from an authorized seller. It applies to the original purchaser only and does not transfer to a later owner.
Gourmia repairs or replaces defective parts at its own discretion. If repair is not possible, Gourmia replaces the product. Gourmia may also refund the cash value.
Normal wear, accidents, misuse and repairs by unauthorized parties fall outside the warranty. Registration happens at gourmia.com/warranty.
Not Covered:
- Normal wear
- Accidents
- Misuse
- Repairs by unauthorized parties
How Does the Gourmia Espresso Machine Compare With Rivals?
The Gourmia espresso machine compares with rivals as a budget pick that matches the De'Longhi Stilosa on pump pressure and costs far less than the Breville Bambino.
The Gourmia GCM4230 has a 15-bar pump, a 1.2 L (40 fl oz) tank and 1,300 W. Gourmia publishes no portafilter size, no heat-up time and no temperature control. A buyer can see the pump and tank, but cannot check the other points.
The European spec of the De'Longhi Stilosa EC260 lists a 15-bar pump. Its removable tank holds 1 L (34 fl oz), and it uses 1,100 W. It weighs about 4.3 kg (9.5 lb) and has a stainless steel boiler and a plastic body. The Gourmia has the larger tank and the higher wattage.
The Breville Bambino lists at $299.95. It has a 54 mm (2.1 in) portafilter, which is the handle that holds the coffee. Breville designs it for a dose near 19 g (0.7 oz). The machine has a 3-second heat-up and a 1.4 L (47 fl oz) tank.
Is the Gourmia Espresso Machine Better Than the Breville Bambino?
No. The Gourmia espresso machine is not better than the Breville Bambino on published specs, but it costs far less.
Price is the biggest difference. The Bambino lists at $299.95. The Gourmia GCM4230 lists at $119 and sold for $50 on sale. That leaves a gap of $180.95 at list price and $249.95 at the sale price.
Heat-up time is the next difference. The Bambino heats in 3 seconds. The GCM4230 preheats until its icons stop pulsing, and Gourmia gives no time for this.
The portafilter is the part that holds the ground coffee. The Bambino uses a 54 mm (2.1 in) commercial-style portafilter. Gourmia lists no portafilter size for the GCM4230. No side-by-side test of the two machines exists, so these published specs are the only basis for comparison.
How Much Does the Gourmia Espresso Machine Cost?
The Gourmia espresso machine costs between $50 and $153, depending on the model. The GCM4230 sits at the low end and the Slim GCM3110 at the high end.
The GCM4230 sold for $50 in Walmart's Black Friday 2023 sale. The regular price was $119.
The Slim GCM3110 costs $152.99 at Walmart. The Slim costs $33.99 more than the GCM4230 list price of $119.
The $50 sale saved $69, or 58%, off the $119 list price.
Price Comparison:
| Machine | Price |
|---|---|
| Gourmia GCM4230 (sale) | $50 |
| Gourmia GCM4230 (list) | $119 |
| Gourmia Slim GCM3110 | $152.99 |
| Breville Bambino | $299.95 |
A grinder is a second purchase. The Baratza Encore ESP, an electric burr grinder, costs about $199.
Where Is the Gourmia Espresso Machine Sold?
The Gourmia espresso machine is sold at Walmart, and the GCM4230 is offered exclusively there.
The Slim GCM3110 comes from Gourmia through Walmart. Wayfair lists the Slim too, so that model can be bought from two retailers.
Used GCM4230 units and spare parts appear on eBay. A used GCM4230 drip tray, for example, sells there for $18.70.
Gourmia's own web shop lists the 4-shot steam model, marked sold out when checked.
Is the Gourmia Espresso Machine Worth It?
Yes. The Gourmia espresso machine is worth it for a beginner at the $50 sale price. At the $119 list price the case is weaker.
The strengths are a low entry price, simple one-touch drinks, a compact body and automatic milk foam.
The weaknesses are noise, a plastic build, no published shot data and a one-year warranty.
Pros:
- Low entry price
- Simple one-touch drinks
- Compact body
- Automatic milk foam
Cons:
- Loud pump
- Plastic build
- No published shot data
- One-year warranty
A separate grinder is the real extra cost. Buyers who want a better shot should look at pricier machines with a larger portafilter.
Pump pressure is no reason to buy. The 15-bar rating describes the pump, not the pressure at the coffee.
Other routes suit the same buyer. The Bialetti Moka Express and the AeroPress make strong coffee without a pump. The Nespresso Essenza Mini is a capsule machine that needs no grinder.
Who Should Buy the Gourmia Espresso Machine?
Beginners should buy the Gourmia espresso machine when they want simple lattes and cappuccinos on a small counter.
First-time buyers give the machine its highest marks for ease of use. That makes it a fair fit for someone just starting out.
The slim body suits small kitchens. A narrow machine leaves room on a crowded counter, so it works where space is tight.
Enthusiasts should skip the machine. The GCM4230 has no grinder, so the user must supply ground coffee. It lists no portafilter size. It also states no temperature control.
